Abstract

In this introductory chapter, we enumerate the general themes under which the collection of chapters fall. It opens with the idea that, as rational agents, our actions in the world are largely guided by what beliefs we form as cognitive agents. This requires that humans engage in forms of inquiry to grasp the world. Classically, the scientific form of inquiry was seen as providing the most rational guidance. However, science works effectively only on very abstract problems which admit of simple solutions. As such, vast realms of human inquiry remain untouched by science, thereby raising the salience of other forms of inquiry such as literature, arts and the religions. Through an overview of each of the 11 chapters that follow this one, we chart the reflective enterprise that enables human inquiry to move from the sciences to other forms of inquiry.
