The relation of the categories to ontological synthesis
pp. 85-100
Abstract
Heidegger attempts a preliminary demonstration of the temporal origins of categories by examining their relation to ontological synthesis. For this analysis, Heidegger concentrates on the first six paragraphs of §10 of the Critique of Pure Reason, entitled "The Pure Concepts of the Understanding, or Categories". In this section, Kant analyses the process of synthesis, which combines representations. By showing the connection between the function of the understanding in judgements and its function in syntheses, Kant gives a "Metaphysical Deduction" of the categories.1
