The principle of religious liberty, possibly in fact and certainly in public affirmation, is now recognized over wider reaches of the globe than at any prior time. In this same era, perversion of the principle in a massive program to destroy religion is also unprecedented. And part of the support for the principle comes not from concern for religion, but from indifference to its values and its claims. Freedom of religion is thus mingled with — by many, equated with or metamorphosed into — freedom from religion.
